A new restaurant devoted to chicken has opened in the Jewellery Quarter.

The Rebel Chicken opened its doors on Pitsford Street on Friday June 1, serving up - yes you guessed it - chicken.

You can choose from quarter, half or full and have it marinated, steamed and cooked over charcoal, that has been imported from Cuba.

The restaurant, owned by Boxxed nightclub owner Danny Fisher, has a specialist rotisserie with a combined mix of Cuban and sweet cherry wood logs.

There is a very extensive drinks offering with a separate cocktail, gin, beer and wine menu.

The 50 seater eatery is housed in the short lived Fishylicious restaurant which closed last year.

It is making the most of the building's outside space - with an impressive 120 seater beer garden and courtyard.

The courtyard rather confusingly currently has Fowl Play branding all over it.

Manager Andrew Purvis who was previously bar manager at Bank in BrindleyPlace and Alfie Birds in the Custard Factory , explained why to BirminghamLive: "We originally wanted the restaurant to be called Fowl Play but were forced to change it last minute due to trademark issues with another UK restaurant also called Fowl Play in Newcastle.

"So now we're called The Rebel Chicken"

Restaurant name confusion aside, it looks like this new place, will be competing with The Lord Clifden's beer garden and outdoor terrace at The Button Factory for the title of best outdoor bar space in this part of town.

Andrew added: "We want to make clear that people can come here with a drink - and have some great chicken if they fancy too.

"We will have DJs at the weekend playing in the outdoor area which will be nice for people over the summer. Luckily we don’t have any neighbours - apart from the cemetery over the road."

The food menu is unsurprisingly succinct. It includes The Rebel Wrap - a BLT wrap, chicken Caesar salad buffalo and rebel wings - buffalo wings coated in Rebel Chicken’s homemade signature sauces as well as a veggie burger.

"All our chicken is Red Tractor assured chicken, which means it is responsibly and quality sourced," added Andrew.

The Rebel Chicken's predecessor Fishylicious opened in August 2016, hoping to transport Brummies to the beach with a seafood menu and beachhut style interior.

But just seven months later, owner Sarah Thornton closed the restaurant - blaming damp.

Andrew said of the location: “We had been looking for a site for a few months and when we came across it, we knew it was perfect. We couldn’t find any problems with it. Sarah did a great job, spotted the building’s potential as a restaurant, but the upstairs area - which gets all the sunlight, wasn't utilized at all.

"So we have turned that into the main restaurant area and the downstairs in a bar area."

The Rebel Chicken will be open Thursdays 12 - 11am with last food orders at 9.30, Friday 11am to 1am with last food orders art 10am. On Sundays the eatety will offer 'Rum Reggae and Roasts' from noon.
