There are great places for coffee and cake in Birmingham but our cafe scene is going to get a distinctly Canadian flavour.

BirminghamLive can reveal Tim Hortons has earmarked a prime city centre spot to open its first Birmingham branch.

The coffee giant has lodged a planning application to take over the former Thomson travel agents on 113 New Street - directly opposite Starbucks.

The planning application states a full planning application has been filed “for the change of use from Retail (Use Class A1) to Restaurant/ Café (Use Class A3)”.

“The proposed opening times of the café is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”

The brand which opened its first UK restaurant in Glasgow in May, is a national institution in Canada.

It prides itself on freshly brewed, well priced coffee and delicious donuts as well as other freshly made snacks including bagels and breakfast muffins as well as a more charming friendly service than you’d find in other big name chains from across the pond.

There are more than 3,000 outlets in Canada, as well locations in the U.S and in the Middle East.

One of their most popular drinks is a ‘double double’. The coffee contains two ‘creams’ and two sugars – twice the regular amount.

Hortons also serves sandwiches, soups, various baked goods, breakfast muffins and their signature Timbits - fluffy sugar balls made from the inside of ring donuts.

Named after the famous Canadian hockey player, the company boasts that eight out of 10 cups of coffee sold across Canada are served at Tim Hortons outlets.

Other UK Tim Hortons include Cardiff, Manchester and Belfast.
