The Russians are coming!

Birmingham Hippodrome is preparing to welcome The Kirov Ballet and Orchestra this month and www.birminghampost.net has teamed up with the theatre to give two lucky readers the chance to each win a pair of tickets to be there on opening night.

The 200-strong company, based at the famous Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg will perform at the theatre from May 20-24 as part of an exclusive two-week spring tour to Birmingham and Manchester only.

Part of International Dance Festival Birmingham, the Kirov visit provides the unique chance to see some of the world’s most graceful, strong and exquisite ballet dancers perform a programme of works reflecting the diversity of their rich cultural heritage: Balanchine’s shimmering Jewels, Marius Petipa’s colourful Don Quixote and a Gala Programme featuring Fokine’s Les Sylphides and Kingdom of the Shades from la Bayadère.

The opening night of Jewels on Tuesday 20 May sees the company at their best.  A spectacular three-act ballet, Jewels features magnificent costumes, a glittering set with a shimmering cascade of jewels in mid air and sumptuous choreography from hot and jazzy to romantic and elegant. Choreographer George Balanchine originally created it for his own New York City Ballet but the Kirov was the first company in Europe to stage all three acts together.

Enter our competition to win a pair of top price tickets and be among some of the first to see this world renowned company perform Jewels on opening night.  We have two pairs to give away.
