Here’s a good idea. The Belgrade is putting on lunch and dinner time theatre, with a pie and pint thrown in for good measure.
For five consecutive weeks – starting last Thursday – you can mooch down to the theatre, grab food and drink, included in the price, then enjoy a new 45 minute play.
The idea comes from Glasgow, where they certainly enjoy a pie and a pint – though I didn’t realise the locals had discovered theatre.
The concept works brilliantly.
Last week I caught the first play on the bill, Fly Me To The Moon.
I laughed, I wept, I applauded wildly – and that was just for the pie. (Lamb tagine. Yum.)
Fly Me To The Moon was a two-hander about a couple of female home helps in Northern Ireland, who stumble through a catalogue of bad decision when a man in their care dies.
Funny and inventive, it could have done with less of the toilet humour (I was eating!).
Still, A Play A Pie And A Pint is a great theatrical innovation, and I’ll be back for more. (Beef bourguignon pie, this time, I think...)
