Eighties pop singer Steve Strange said he will defy doctor’s orders and perform at a gig in Birmingham on Thursday, September 19

The New Romantic singer, who is touring with his band Visage, has been suffering from a viral infection and doctors had warned him he could damage his voice if he carries on with his tour.

He said: “I am defying doctor’s orders. They have said my voice could go altogether and my voice is my tool. I have had two days in bed but I am really looking forward to the gig in Birmingham.”

He added: “We have great memories of Birmingham and in the early days we supported Duran Duran at the Rum Runner.”

Steve Strange was a pioneer of the New Romantic movement and ran the London club Blitz, an 80s glam nightspot.

Visage - whose hits include electropop classic Fade to Grey - play The Institute in Digbeth on September 19 at 7pm.
