Mercury Music Prize nominee Laura Mvula will be introducing a new artist to Birmingham audiences tonight (Tuesday) as part of the Tia Maria Music Room series.

Mvula, back in her hometown for a gig at The Institute, has been curating the Tia Maria showcase series since she performed at the inaugural event at The Century Club in London in June, hand-picking hotly-tipped artists to perform in the intimate settings of small bars.

Bebe Black has been chosen to perform at The Vaults, in Newhall Place, and Mvula will be heading down to the Jewellery Quarter bar after her gig at the Institute for her aftershow party.

Bebe Black, whose music has been compared to Florence and the Machine and Katy B, said:  “Being invited by an artist like Laura Mvula to sing on the Tia Maria Music Room stage is such an accolade.

"Following in her footsteps after her opening night performance is quite a bit of pressure but I’m hoping that what I’ve got planned will be up to the high standard she set back in June.”

Birmingham Conservatoire graduate Mvula, who was one of the Pyramid stage highlights at this year's Glastonbury, added: “Playing a part in picking the artist which will perform on the night is something I’m really passionate about – it’s humbling to be considered someone who can help up and coming artists into the spotlight as it doesn’t feel very long ago that I needed the same support.

"The event is on the same night as my tour date at Birmingham’s Institute so I’m considering it my unofficial after party."
