As far as concerts go, jazz in the Midlands still hasn’t quite roused itself from its summer torpor, but the regular pub gigs continue as healthily as always.

Tonight (September 2) the band at Andy Hamilton’s Bearwood Corks Club session is called Time Enough.

Last time we looked, Time Enough was a seven-piece including Cliff Martin on keyboards, John Kent on bass and Mark Brown on tenor, and playing a mix of jazz fusion with some Brazilian touches.

The doors open at 8.30pm, the music starts at 9pm, and entry is £4 at the door.

The Bearwood Corks Club is in Bearwood Road, Bearwood. Find out more at www.bearwoodjazz.co.uk

* Anyone who lives around Lichfield and has the odd pint in a local hostelry will have heard trumpeter Nick Dewhurst’s band Funktional. Naff name, I know, but this young quintet really does mean business and works hard at a wide range of jazz with a funk edge.

The band is at one of its regular haunts this evening: The King’s Head in Bird Street, Lichfield. The music gets started shortly after 8pm and entry is free.

* Also, make a note in your diaries now for the Back Room Jazz Festival, brainchild of Nick, which runs from October 17-21. It’s five nights of jazz in the back room of the George IV pub in Lichfield. The venue was used for a very successful late evening series during the Lichfield Festival and Nick has programmed some good bands for these gigs, including Tim Amann’s X-tet.

* Free Sunday afternoon jazz is always popular and The Queen’s Head, Wolverley, near Kidderminster, is the latest venue to offer this laid-back way of delaying the Monday blues. The music runs from 1pm-4pm, and you could always tie it in with a roast Sunday dinner.

The band this Sunday consists of Mark Bettis, Elmer O’Shea & Pete Round, with C-Jazz in the house next Sunday, and Sara Colman the week after that.

* Sunday evening means a trip to The Chapel at No.1 Shakespeare St, Stratford-upon-Avon and the little jazz club that never takes a holiday, Stratford Jazz.

This Sunday the club presents Pedalmania, an organ trio comprising John-Paul Gard on organ, Ben Waghorn on saxophone and Eddie John on drums.

A lot of modern Hammond C-3 players don’t bother with the foot pedals, preferring to play the bass lines with their left hand or – scandal of scandals – by employing a separate bass player. Not Gard. The man does things with his feet that should be illegal.

See just what from 8pm on Sunday night. It’ll only cost you £6 at the door.
