John Ruddick spends nearly all his time these days rehearsing and leading the Midlands Youth Jazz Orchestra, so rare is the occasion when we can hear him indulging his initial passion: just playing the trumpet.

He will get to do just that on Sunday at The Chapel, No.1 Shakespeare St, Stratford-upon-Avon when he appears in his Quintet for Stratford Jazz.

On piano is Jo Ruddick, Andy Derrick is on trombone, Zoltan Dekany on bass and John Gibson on drums. The fun starts at 8pm, entrance is £6 on the door.

Before that on Sunday pianist Edgar Macias and friends, including trumpeter Ray Butcher and drummer Malcolm Ritter, play from 3pm to 6pm at the Scarlet Pimpernel in Harborne. Entrance is free.

Finally, it’s not jazz but Portuguese fado is close in blues mood and rhythmic subtlety – and there is no finer fado singer than Mariza. She is at Warwick Arts Centre on Monday at 8pm. More at warwickartscentre.co.uk
