Cellist Julian Lloyd Webber, jazz singer Ann Arscott and international pianist Peter Donohoe are among the high-profile guests at this year’s International Piano Academy in Birmingham.

The three-week course, set up by Birmingham Conservatoire graduate David Quigley a decade ago, has now developed into the Birmingham City University Summer School.

“This is now a truly world-class educational opportunity with a star faculty including well- known British pianists Mark Bebbington, head of keyboard John Thwaites and distinguished educator Malcolm Wilson among the team,” says Di Xiao, a Conservatoire graduate who is currently running the academy.

“We’ve been working hard to make sure our students all have a fantastic experience during the three-week course. As course director I’ve tried to create an exciting programme which hosts public events and broadening opportunities, for example a yoga session to increase focus and calmness, beside traditional one-to-one lessons, master classes and group tuition.

“Also, as all our IPA students are travelling from overseas, we have set up a series of fun activities to give them a rounded cultural experience. From English lessons to an open-top bus tour, a visit to the Town Hall, a day trip to London, a karaoke night and even a salsa dance lesson.”

Some world-famous names are adding their lustre to this year’s academy at Birmingham Conservatoire, not least cellist Julian Lloyd Webber, who has sadly been forced to retire prematurely from playing following a long-term neck condition.

His question-and-answer session on July 28 will be the first time he has spoken in public since his decision to retire.

Another guest is the jazz singer Ann Arscott, who appeared as Billie Holliday in ITV’s Stars in their Eyes and subsequently toured the world as a performer.

“Sadly, about five years ago she suffered a serious stroke that nearly killed her,” Di (known as Didi) continues.

“After nine weeks in intensive care she fought back but completely lost the ability to speak, read and write but, amazingly, she can still sing.

“Ann is performing at the Didi and Friends concert on July 23. The event has a colourful dress code to match the upbeat atmosphere, so no matter if you are in dress, jeans or mini skirt, please bring some brightness into our concert!”
