The most unlikely of pop sensations The Magic Numbers performed to a packed out and highly enthusiastic audience at The Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton, on Saturday night.
Their meteoric rise was exemplified when lead singer and guitarist Romeo Stodart asked the question "how many of you saw us here when we supported Travis a year ago?" and only a handful of arms were tentatively raised.
At a time when most pop music is so much style over substance, The Magic Numbers offered a refreshing return to musical craftsmanship.
Fitting then that, despite a wealth of original material, the highlight was Cowgirl in the Sand, a song by another musical maverick, Neil Young, performed in all its original ragged glory.
