Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Bates, Terry Bradshaw, Zooey Deschanel, Justin Bartha, Bradley Cooper.
Handsome slacker Tripp (McConaughey) has the looks and charm to win the heart of any woman he desires but he is seriously lacking in motivation.
Like his best pals, Ace (Bartha) and Demo (Cooper), Tripp still lives at home with his parents, making the most of a place to crash where he doesn't have to pay rent.
Infuriated by their son's behaviour, Tripp's mother and father, Sue (Bates) and Al (Bradshaw), resort to underhand tactics to get their boy to fly the family nest.
They hire Paula (Parker) to seduce their boy and encourage him to buy a place of his own. She promises to secretly cure Tripp's "failure to launch" in a matter of weeks using her foolproof plan, which includes faking the death of a beloved pet.
Unfortunately, Tripp needs far more encouragement than Paula or his parents anticipate.
Failure To Launch is a tepid romantic comedy, loosely spun by screenwriters Tom J Astle and Matt Ember. The attractive cast stumbles from one misfiring misadventure to the next, looking suitably apologetic to expose us to this sorry confection.
McConaughey and Parker are mismatched in the cartoonish lead roles, generating only a few sparks of sexual tension. When McConaughey isn't gratuitously flaunting his washboard stomach, his comic timing is ever so slightly awry, while his co-star is too spiky to be truly adorable as a woman scarred by a previous, failed romance.
Worryingly, the sweetest couplings in the film involve the supporting players, who also snaffle many of the best laughs.
The screenwriters pad out the running time with a number of curious When Animals Attack interludes, in which McConaughey's beefcake is attacked by various normally placid critters. Tellingly, we cheer every peck and bite.
