Energy expert Make It Cheaper has launched an initiative aimed at helping small and medium-sized enterprises in Birmingham save thousands of pounds on their energy bills.

The company, which has switched more than 250,000 energy contracts for businesses since it started in 2007, said that on average it has cut its customers’ bills by £1,150 on average through switching business gas and electricity.

As a result it has adopted the slogan ‘putting a smile on the faces of British business’.

Now Make It Cheaper is keen to attract Birmingham business due to enterprise being boosted in the city by the council’s award-winning business support package scheme and Big City Plan.

We spoke to Make It Cheaper CEO Jonathan Elliott to why he believes that Birmingham SMEs can benefit from :

Why should small business in Birmingham choose Make It Cheaper?

Our UK-based customer service team takes care of switching, saving time and hassle.

We only work with suppliers who we trust to provide competitive deals that we can pass on to customers.

We will help businesses avoid expensive rates in the future by telling them when their contract is up for renewal

Make It Cheaper is proud to be the only organisation trusted by price comparison sites like Go Compare, MoneySupermarket and uSwitch to look after their business customers.

We’ve also been selected, through a rigorous process, to partner with the Federation of Small Businesses and offer impartial help to its members.

As well as specialising in helping businesses, we help homeowners find the best deals for their energy, too.

Is there a particular type of small business that Make it Cheaper is more suited to?

No, we have specialists that cater for every type of business.

Birmingham has a diverse range of small business focuses – from the largest concentration of dedicated jewellers in Europe in the Jewellery Quarter, to an astonishing number of retails outlets.

At Make it Cheaper we have experience with all types of businesses and work on finding an energy tariff that both saves them money and time.

Why are you targeting small businesses?

Many business owners know little about the commercial energy market and this can make it more difficult to find the right deal.

By helping businesses to operate with lower costs, they hand over less of their hard-earned cash to big, powerful suppliers and their own profits benefit.

They spend less time dealing directly with call centres.

Those improved profits can be reinvested to pay for something like a much-needed redecoration; an apprentice; a long-overdue holiday; gym membership for all employees; a new company website. We call that the ‘Butterfly Effect’.

What is the best success story you have had since starting your business in 2007?

In the space of ten years, we’ve grown independently from five to about 200 UK-based staff – all dedicated to helping customers not only get on, but stay on competitive rates for their utilities. Some of the biggest successes include:

• Manchester Academy of English – study centre for people who have moved to the UK to learn English – saved £9,200 which can be used to support students

• RSPCA North Wiltshire – the charity was struggling with bills, the savings they made will go towards opening an animal welfare centre in Swindon

• The Thirsk and Sowerby Institute – we saved them £2,000 – allowing them to give their hall a makeover to serve the community.
