Motorists are being warned they face a £60 fine if they are caught driving in some city bus lanes as new enforcement comes into action next week.

The city council has erected 20 camera housings at locations in the city centre and on the A5127 Lichfield Road/A38 Tyburn Road in Aston, the B4128 in Bordesley Green and A441 Pershore Road in Edgbaston.

But the housings will actually only have ten active cameras in them at any one time and these will be moved between locations.

The new enforcement will come into action on Monday September 4 but there will be a grace period until October 2 for drivers caught in the bus lanes and also to allow the council to test the new systems.

Caught motorists will be issued with a penalty charge notice, sent to the registered keeper of the vehicle, containing details of the alleged contravention, details of the vehicle and three photographs showing the contravention.

Police can also fine vehicles which are using a bus lane or bus only road illegally.

The £60 fine will be reduced to £30 if paid within 14 days of the penalty charge notice being issued.

City councillors voted in January to approve the installation of the 20 camera housings which has cost £459,000.

The cost of issuing and collecting fines, maintenance, court action and publicity is expected to run to £3.3 million over five years but councillors say this will be covered by fines collected.
