Dilapidated flat blocks in Bartley Green could be bulldozed as part of a council regeneration scheme.

Birmingham City Council has unveiled proposals to build 77 new properties on a five-acre plot of land between Monmouth Road and Senneleys Park.

The authority stated the development would provide social housing in part of the city which desperately needed it, especially bungalows allowing people to downsize and free up large family homes in the area.

The site used to accommodate four 13-storey tower blocks, each containing 50 flats, which were demolished in 2011.

There are currently four rows of 'flat over garage' blocks on the site.

The council had submitted previous plans in 2016 which would have retained them but the authority has since changed its mind now deciding to acquire and level the outdated buildings.

A planning document states that the tenants were rehoused over the last year.

Forty-nine of the new properties would be made available on the open market while the remaining 28, including 16 bungalows and 12 houses, would be retained for social housing.

The council stated in 2013/14 that only 36 per cent of the demand for two-bedroom properties and less than eight per cent of demand for four-bedroom houses was met in the Bartley Green area.

A design and access statement added: "The provision of two bedroom bungalows on this site for social rent will allow tenants who currently live in large family homes the opportunity to move to smaller accommodation which will meet their needs in later life.

"This would increase the availability of large family homes for those in greatest need on the council’s housing waiting list.

"The proposal to build 28 houses for rent in this location will contribute to meeting local demand for affordable housing."
