With political change afoot, meaning the West Midlands will rise or fall based on its own economy, we ask: How are we getting on compared to other regions?

Talks are taking place over a combined authority to give greater powers and billions of pounds more spending each year to the region.

We have created a new interactive graphic to show how this region measures up with others in the UK in four distinct categories: the workforce, the economy, quality of living and housing.

A disclaimer: The notion of the West Midlands, without starting to think of Greater Birmingham and so on, is up for debate at the moment. This takes in the old “metropolitan county” area, bringing together Birmingham, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall, Wolverhampton and Coventry.

Pick your preferred measure from the drop-down menus to see how the region fares against others, like Greater Manchester and London.
