If you feel your daily commute has been getting slower - it turns out you are right.

Data released by the Department for Transport today shows average speeds on A-roads across Birmingham are continuing to drop.

Across the city, they stood at 18.7 mph in 2015 and 18.6 mph in 2016 - a number which fell again to 18.3 mph in 2017.

Average speeds in Birmingham are much slower than the national average.

Across the country, the average speed on A-roads was 25.2 mph in 2017 - the same as in 2016.

In the rest of the West Midlands road speeds aren’t much higher, however - having fallen slightly from 20.4 mph in 2016 to 20.1 mph last year.

The M6 has been jammed by over-running roadworks.

Meanwhile, Birmingham also has particularly bad delays caused by congestion.

In the city, traffic added 82 seconds to every mile of an A-road journey on average - although this delay doesn’t factor in the time of day.

Those travelling at rush hour are more likely to see much longer delays, on average.

In the rest of the West Midlands traffic added 69 seconds to every mile travelled, while across England there was an extra 47 seconds added per car per mile.
