An unwanted Birmingham police station which reputed to be haunted has been sold for £730,000 at auction.

The 1904 built station on Canterbury Road, Perry Barr was put up for sale by West Midlands Police after being closed last year.

Former police officer Mike Talbot told the Birmingham Mail about the rumours of a ghost when he served there in the 1970s, saying he put the unexplained late night noises down to an ancient heating system.

But he added: “It was said that several policewomen flatly refused to work in the station at night on their own.”

The 5,594sq ft former police station went under the hammer at a property sale hosted by SDL Auctions Bigwood at Villa Park.

Meanwhile, eight former NatWest Bank branches in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire – including three with historic listing status – were sold for a total of more than £2 million.

Among them was the Grade II-listed, 2,637 sq ft property at 9 Church Street, opposite Southwell Minster in the affluent town of Southwell, Nottinghamshire, which sold for £530,000.

Another Grade II-listed former bank was at 31 Market Square in Rugeley, Staffordshire.

Head of commercial auctions Ian Tudor said: “These unusual lots created strong competition which resulted in some outstanding sale prices, and the day was a great success.”

MoreSDL Auctions Bigwood Birmingham auctions will be held at Villa Park on February 15, March 28, May 9, July 5, September 6, October 18 and December 12.

Mr Tudor added: “Vendors and purchasers do not need to go to London for regular big property auctions, as we’re providing several every month across the UK.

“Our growing number of auctions shows that despite the wider static economy, vendors are increasingly choosing auctions because it’s a fast and efficient way of achieving high prices and a secure sale.”
