The redevelopment of the iconic greyhound racing stadium in Hall Green has cleared its final hurdle.

Birmingham City Council's planning committee yesterday (Thursday, September 27) granted Galliford Try Partnerships' detailed 'reserved matters' application for 210 homes at the site.

They also approved a separate proposal for a replacement phone mast, to be installed near Silverlands Close, which will provide 4G coverage for Vodafone and O2.

Work to demolish the derelict ground has been ongoing since May and the stadium, which hosted racing for 100 years, has been reduced to rubble.

It closed in 2016 the same year that the council granted a proposal in principle to build houses in its place.

Despite the inevitability of development more than 50 residents, along with Cllr Akhlaq Ahmed who represents Hall Green North, objected to the latest scheme.

Concerns included its size, traffic and whether local schools and GP surgeries could cope with extra residents.

Cllr Ahmed also listed a number of other criticisms and claimed local people were not consulted.

But council officers concluded the proposals were sustainable and the committee subsequently granted planning permission with little debate.

The new development will feature two blocks of flats either side of an entrance off York Road.

The route will sweep round the scheme in a U-shape and form another access point off York Road.

Those on foot will also be able to walk through from Silverlands Close.

The development will deliver 32 affordable homes.
