Hall Green was secured by Labour when Tony Blair came to power in 1997 and has remained red ever since – and is set to remain that way in the next term according to bookies.

Incumbent Roger Godsiff saw his majority reduce significantly last time round but still had almost 4,000 over the next contender.

The Tories are putting up James Bird against him, a former city councillor and seen as a bright young thing. However, he is a 100/1 outsider.

The Lib Dems’ Jerry Evans are considered the strongest rivals to Mr Godsiff, at 12/1, while Ladbrokes put Respect at 16/1 and UKIP at 66/1. Elly Stanton is standing for the Greens.

Last time round, Salma Yaqoob from Respect was the closest challenger, securing 12,240 votes, compared to Mr Godsiff’s 16,039.
