Birmingham City Council leader Sir Albert Bore has come out in support of Jack Dromey and Harriet Harman – saying national newspaper attacks are politically motivated.

Labour councillor Sir Albert, who has worked alongside the pair for decades, says “no-one” believes they had links to paedophile rights campaigners, as claimed by the Daily Mail.

The accusations relate to claims the National Council for Civil Liberties, a group the pair were member of, supported the Paedophile Information Exchange.

However, Sir Albert said it was his understanding that paedophile group essentially infiltrated the National Council for Civil Liberties, which was opposed to censorship at the time of the accusations, in the 1970s.

He said: “I have known Jack Dromey and Harriet Harman for many years and, has individuals of principle and integrity, they have spent their entire working lives campaigning for the rights of victims, the oppressed or those suffering inequality, whether those are children, women, workers, et cetera.

“So, no-one believes for one minute that either of these highly regarded politicians supports or condones paedophile groups in any way, and in the light of the Daily Mail’s attack on Ed Miliband last year, I can only agree with Harriet Harman that this is a ‘politically-motivated smear’ – dredged up from nearly 40 years ago.”
