Roadworks designed to remove bottlenecks and ease congestion on the Birmingham city centre ring road are set to be approved by councillors on Monday.

More than £14 million will be invested in new lanes, junction upgrades and other measures next year to improve traffic flows around the busy city centre route.

Works on Bordesley Circus, Haden Circus, Curzon Circle, Holloway Circus and Ashted Circus are expected to begin in January and February next year and will be completed by the end of the summer.

The cash is made up of grants from the Department for Transport, Centro, Enterprize Zone and other transport funds.

Council cabinet member for transport Tahir Ali said: "Next year's improvements to the city's ring roads will ease traffic congestion at key pinch points around the city and the knock on effect of this will be to support continued economic growth in Birmingham and the wider region.

"This is a golden opportunity to make some massive improvements to key roads but the terms of the funding are that it must all be completed quickly which is why we are planning to get the majority of it done early next year.

"We have all learnt a lot from our experience with the tunnel closures over the last two summers and we will do all we can to ensure that the majority of this work will go ahead off site and during off-peak times."
