Birmingham schoolgirl and education campaigner Malala Yousafzai is to be a guest at the Institute of Asian Business awards dinner.

The Pakistani teenager, who was shot in the head by the Taliban on her way home from school, is to attend the event on November 30 at the ICC in Birmingham.

The 16-year-old was treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and now attends Edgbaston High School for Girls.

The main speaker at the dinner will be Raminder Singh Ranger MBE, founder and chairman of export companies Sun Mark and Sea, Air and Land Forwarding, which have won five Queen’s Awards for Export and Enterprise.

Mr Ranger began his career as a cook at Kentucky Fried Chicken earning 35p per hour.

He was awarded the MBE for services to British businesses and the Asian community.

Nasir Awan, president of the IAB, said: “Malala is internationally recognised for her inspiration and determination which is a lesson for us all, especially in the business world where all of us need to aim for success despite the challenges.”

Actor and comedian Kulvinder Ghir, star of Goodness Gracious Me and Bend it like Beckham will be the compere for the evening.

The IAB dinner will include four awards, business person of the year, customer service of the year, young entrepreneur of the year and outstanding contribution to society.

The winners have been chosen by the IAB executive committee.
