Two young women were tricked into going to England where they were held captive in a West Midlands flat, raped and forced into prostitution, a court heard.

The 18-year-old and 21-year-old left Lithuania on the promise of "a legitimate job and a better life".

Instead, they were held in a flat in Coventry and driven to massage parlours across the UK, a Leicester Crown Court jury was told.

They were only rescued when a sauna owner in Leicester took one of the alleged victims into her care and called police.

Yesterday, the jury was told how Leonard Llanaj and his girlfriend, Lisa Benjamin, had been part of a human trafficking scam to bring the women to England.

The pair allegedly imported the women from Lithuania to earn money for them as prostitutes between July and September 18 last year.

Neither of the two alleged victims were allowed out of the flat in Stoney Stanton Road, alone, and became dependant on the defendants.

One of the women spoke of being repeatedly raped during her ordeal by another gang member, being beaten with a stick, pinched and flicked with cigarette ash, the court was told. Llanaj allegedly raped the other. Benjamin, herself a prostitute, would allegedly take the women shopping for clothes.

They were locked in the Stoney Stanton Road property and not allowed out unaccompanied, the court heard. Any attempts to escape were thwarted. Albanian- born Llanaj (18), of Cricklade Road, Swindon, and Benjamin (24), of Oliver Street, Coventry, both deny two counts of inciting prostitution, two of controlling prostitution for gain, and two counts of trafficking within the UK for sexual exploitation.

Llanaj also denies raping one of the girls between September 17 and 18 last year.

Both women had been targeted in their homeland by other gang members, the court heard. They were befriended and told they could find "a promise of a better life" working at bars in England.

But when they arrived, they were met by a number of men and quickly they realised they had been duped.

The trial continues.
