Young people from across Birmingham are preparing to gather to discuss the volatile topics of faith and citizenship in the wake of last month's riots between the black and Asian communities in the Lozells area of the city.

Two Birmingham-based organisations, the College for International Citizenship and the Young People's Parliament, have invited 180 young people aged between 11 and 25 years old to a day-long event on Saturday where they will talk about what their faith means to them as citizens of Birmingham.

The event, which is being held at Millennium Point, aims to give youngsters the opportunity to find common ground between their faiths and to explore ways to improve relations between Birmingham's communities.

The day will culminate in the drawing up of a "Birmingham Declaration of Shared Values".

The declaration will be hung in Millennium Point with Birmingham residents invited to show their support by signing it, before it is sent to councillors, city offices and Birmingham MPs and MEPs.
