The World Cup co-ordinator for the Berlin city government shot himself in the head in an apparent suicide attempt just hours after the final.

Juergen Kiessling, aged 65, shot himself hours after the tournament ended on Sunday and is fighting for his life in a Berlin hospital.

Schulz said there was no indication anyone else was involved, but had no information on a possible motive.

Mr Kiessling was known as 'Mister WM' (Mr World Cup) by colleagues in Berlin and was responsible for the Fan Mile in Berlin city centre, a hugely successful concourse where giant screens showed the matches for fans.
