John Brain has rejected a request from the Welsh Rugby Union to rest prop Chris Horsman and will instead play the tighthead in this Saturday’s crunch Guinness Premiership match with Leicester Tigers.
The Worcester director of rugby received the request from Gareth Jenkins, head coach of the Wales national side, although he has agreed not to play the front row forward for the entire 80 minutes at Sixways this weekend.
“They told me what they had planned for him and they said they would prefer if we did not use him this weekend” said Brain. “Because he has missed a lot of training this season I can understand that but in the other sense he is a quality player.
“We have reached a compromise whereby we are utilising him but he will not play for the full game.”
The incident in just the latest in this week’s saga which has seen the Premiership accuse the Rugby Football Union of ‘emotional blackmail’ by naming the England side to play Ireland on Saturday week to deter their clubs from picking them.
