Plans for a Bob Woolmer memorial tournament at Edgbaston have been cancelled due to funding problems.

Organisers had hoped to announce details of the quadrangular Twenty20 tournament next week. It was to have been held on July 25 with the intention of raising funds for a Bob Woolmer cricket academy in South Africa. Brian Lara, Inzamamul-Haq, Michael Vaughan and Ricky Ponting had agreed to captain four sides of international standard.

However, the failure to secure funding agreements for the academy and a lack of interest from television companies has seen the plans shelved. Crucially India are touring Sri Lanka when the match was scheduled so the Woolmer games were deemed not to be of interest to that key market.

Two celebration dinners will still take place, one in London and the other in Birmingham, but the dates will be rescheduled.
