A Staffordshire woman was fighting for her life in hospital last night after she was run over by her own car.

The 58-year-old became trapped under the vehicle on a private farm track near the canal, off the A51 at Weston, at about 3.30pm on Monday.

It is believed she had left her car on a humpback bridge and walked in front of it to open a gate. The car rolled down the hill and knocked her over.

The woman, who was knocked unconscious and suffered injuries to her pelvis, abdomen and chest, was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken by air ambulance to the North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary.

A police spokesman said: "No other persons or vehicles were involved in what appears to have been an unfortunate accident."
