A motorist seriously injured in a Birmingham city car crash in the early hours of Thursday has died in hospital.

The 30-year-old woman from Nottinghamshire died following the incident which happening at about 3.30am on St Chad’s Queensway, near Lancaster Circus.

A 43-year-old passenger from Smethwick who was also travelling in the car received minor injures.

Police are investigating the collision in which the Hyundai Coupe left the road and collided with a road sign. A lamppost was also damaged.

The woman driver had to be cut free from the wreckage before being taken to City Hospital where she died. She has not been named.

The road remained closed until 7am.

Specialist collision investigators from the Force Traffic unit have visited the scene to examine the vehicle and road in a bid to establish the exact cause. CCTV footage is being reviewed.
