Mick McCarthy has repeatedly stated he is only interested in recruiting players with genuine hunger to succeed at Molineux and any new arrivals this summer will only have to look at defender George Elokobi for a classic example of what the Wolverhampton Wanderers manager means.
McCarthy is building a young squad that is capable of delivering a bright future for Wanderers but he is equally looking for desire from his players.
Elokobi is the living embodiment of McCarthy’s philosophy. The 22-year-old has emerged with credit after his committed performances at left back following his move to Wolves from Colchester United during the transfer window. But it isn’t just his performances on match day that have impressed McCarthy: the Cameroon-born defender has shown an almost insatiable desire to learn his trade.
Elokobi has all the natural attributes to become a top defender. His honesty has endeared him to the Molineux faithful, while his willingness to listen to McCarthy and improve his game has delighted the Wolves boss.
Elokobi has also been pleased with his progress since his move from Layer Road and is relishing the prospect of his first full season as a Wolves player.
“It’s been fantastic for me,” he admitted. “Not so long ago I was playing park football and don’t get me wrong I’d still be doing that now if I had to.
“The progress I’ve made is something I never dreamt would happen but it’s happened and I’ve got to deal with it. It’s all been down to hard work and the determination to get to where I am.
“I’m a confident person but I’ve known I’ve had to work hard and I’ve always been ready to push myself.”
