It's been nearly two years since he represented his country and a month since he started a Premier-ship game for his club but, according to Bryan Robson, Martin Albrechtsen could force his way back into the Denmark squad.

The West Bromwich Albion manager has revealed the difficulty he has in leaving out the 24-year-old in favour of Steve Watson and claims the only area Albrechtsen has to work on is his on-field persona.

Former FC Copenhagen defender Albrechtsen, who was Albion's record signing when he joined the club for #2.4 million in June last year, has been unable to dislodge Watson in recent matches but, after a decent cameo against Manchester City last Saturday, Robson suggested that he could add to his three international caps.

"He has been in the Denmark set up before and for me that is always my aim to make my players better," said Robson. "If I can get them back into the international team that's what I think their aim should be too."

The former England captain added that Albrechtsen's biggest problem is the fact that he is not a snarling fist-pumping full-back in the mould of Stuart Pearce or Danny Mills.

"He is a quiet lad - that's the way he is. I keep saying to him that he cannot be as quiet as he is. You have got to have a presence about your game," Robson said.

"His performance in the Blackburn game [a 2-0 defeat on October 1] was probably about as good as any player has played this season. He was outstanding."

Despite the right-back's vocal shortcomings, Robson said that Albrechtsen is a perfect foil for Watson. "He has come out of his shell to a certain degree and that is why he is getting better. He really wants to impose himself on the Premiership," said Robson. "I think he can get better.

"He is unlucky that he is not in the team because he has played exceptionally well this season. Steve has just got that little bit more experience and know-how on the ball and that's why he's in. Martin has done nothing wrong when he has been in the team."

And his versatility is valued too. "He can play left b ack as well," Robson explained. "You have got Steve Watson and Robbo [Paul Robinson] and Clem [Neil Clement] - who can go in the full back position as well.

"But I don't have such a worry if Steve Watson or Paul Robinson are injured because I have got a player who will go in there have a great attitude, get on with the game and go on and do me a job."

Meanwhile, Luton midfielder Carlos Edwards admits to being flattered over reported interest from Albion and has left the door open for Robson to make a bid.

The Trinidad & Tobago international has impressed this term for the Championship side and Robson could return to Kenilworth Road for the second time in four months, having already bought central defender Curtis Davies for #3 million.

Edwards says he is flat-tered with talk of Premiership interest and stressed that if his club accepted an offer from the Baggies the he would happily talk to them.

Albion, however, have never said anything on the record to suggest their interest is anything other than a product of the football rumour mill. Robson has already said he does not intend to pay a fee for a player during the transfer window.

"It's been very gratifying to hear that clubs in the Premiership are tracking my progress," Edwards said.

"If a bid comes in and the club accept it, it's a different story and we will talk about it, but at the moment I'm happy playing for Luton."

But Albion could be about to miss out on another rumoured target, Poland defender Jaroslaw Bieniuk, who has joined up with Leeds United for a week-long trial.

Elland Road manager Kevin Blackwell appears to have stolen a march on Albion though having offered the Amica Wronki player an opportunity to fulfil his dreams of playing in England.

Leeds are also considering a bid for estranged Albion midfielder Jason Koumas who is currently on a season-long loan at Cardiff City.

Robson may be tempted to sell the Welshman during the transfer window, with Leeds preparing a bid of #1 million - a figure Cardiff would be unable to match. ..SUPL:
