George Lucas told the story over more than 13 hours of film - but his production company has now given its approval for the entire Star Wars saga to be reduced to just 20 minutes.
Star Wars - Shortened! is being written and directed by the co-founder of the Reduced Shakespeare Company, famous for crunching down the Bard's 37 plays to only 97 minutes.
Creators of the new production promise to include every plot point from the Star Wars epic, from Anakin Skywalker's move to the Dark Side, Princess Leia's rescue from the Empire and the construction of the new Death Star.
Lucasfilm, of which Star Wars creator Lucas is chairman, has sanctioned the reduced comedic version which is being broadcast on Sky Movies.
Reduced Shakespeare Company co-creator Adam Long will star in the comedy with two other performers, as well as write and direct.
Long said: "This is my boyhood dream, in the space of 20 minutes I'm going to be Jabba the Hutt, Jar Jar Binks, Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker."
A one-off performance of Star Wars - Shortened! will take place at the Criterion Theatre in front of an audience of 600 invited guests.
Fans can win tickets to the performance on August 17 before it is broadcast during the Sky Movies' Star Wars week-long season beginning on August 26.
Sky channels and services deputy managing director Sophie Turner-Laing said: "What better way to celebrate showing the entire saga?"
