Deputy Prime Minister John 'Two Jags' Prescott may have a penchant for Midland-produced limos but his Government does not appear too keen on the British motor industry.

That was the accusation it faced yesterday after a new report revealed that out of 186 cars in the Government fleet, only 28 were made in Britain.

The Government Car and Despatch Agency revealed there are currently 16 Rover 75s in the fleet. There are 11 Jaguars and Daimlers, and another car identified as Jaguar-built

limousine. However the most popular vehicle is the Ford Mondeo, built in Belgium. The Government owns 65 of these. It also owns 35 Toyota Prius cars, built in Japan, and 33 Vauxhall Omegas, built in Germany.

Midland MP John Spellar (Lab Warley) said: "This is outrageous. Although Rover has gone, Jaguar is still making vehicles in the UK, but also Toyota, Nissan and Honda have all shown increasing commitment to UK manufacturing."
