Tony Blair must not be allowed to return to power as president of Europe, according to a West Midlands MP.
Dan Kawczynski (Con Shrewsbury and Atcham) has launched a campaign to block the former Prime Minister from the top job in the European Union. He is calling on his own party to promise it will veto Mr Blair’s candidacy, if the Tories win the next election.
It follows the Government’s announcement that Britain will back Mr Blair as its preferred candidate for the new role.
The policy was revealed by Lady Kinnock, the Minister for Europe, earlier this month. Although her comments appeared to be authorised from Downing Street, she revealed that “the UK government is supporting Tony Blair’s candidature for president of the council.”
It could mean a remarkable comeback for Mr Blair, who was Prime Minister from 1997 to 2007 before being forced out of office by Labour backbenchers.
The post of President of the EU Council already exists but it is a low-key position which rotates between the leaders of member states and lasts for only six months. The current holder is the Prime Minister of Sweden.
