The funeral of a soldier who was killed during an exchange of fire with Taliban fighters in Afghanistan will take place in his home town today.

Private Jeff Doherty, a member of the 2nd Battalion of The Parachute Regiment, died on June 12 while serving on his first operational tour.

The trooper, who had celebrated his 20th birthday just two days previously, was described earlier this week by his father and stepmother as a proud soldier who died "doing what he loved and believed in".

His funeral will take place this afternoon at St James Parish Church in Southam, Warwickshire.

Shops in the town are expected to close as a mark of respect during the service.

Lance Corporal James Bateman, originally from Staines, Middlesex, died in the same firefight which claimed the life of Pte Doherty in the Upper Gereshk Valley in Helmand Province.
