WARWICKSHIRE begin their Friends Provident Trophy campaign tomorrow when Somerset visit Edgbaston (midday start).

The two teams, who have been locking horns in the championship for the last four days in Taunton, will travel to Birmingham to face each other in a 50-over game.

Next month they return to Taunton for the reverse fixture.

Tomorrow will bring the first chance for Warwickshire to show if they have benefited from the great emphasis that director of cricket Ashley Giles placed on practicing one-day cricket skills during the winter. Last season the Bears were erratic and, at times, very poor, in 50 and 40-over cricket.

“Our cricket in the Twenty20 was very strong until we messed up the quarter-final,” Giles said. “But we want to do a lot better and show a lot more consistency in the FPL and Pro40. We only showed glimpses of the right quality last season.

“We have worked hard on our one-day skills over the winter and in Rikki Clarke we have a good addition to the squad.

“It’s just a shame that we’re still waiting for Jeetan Patel’s visa to come through, having two spinners worked very well for us last season.”
