A traffic warden has handed in his resignation after he was allegedly spotted putting a ticket on his own car so he could park illegally.

Andrew Sewell was reported by a member of the public after, it is claimed, he was seen flouting parking restrictions in Sacheverel Street, Derby, while on duty last week.

He had only been in the job a month when he allegedly slapped one of the notices on his car window so he could use toilets in a nearby cafe.

Mr Sewell, 40, said he was suffering from a stomach upset at the time. Derby City Council took over responsibility for enforcing parking restrictions on July 3.

A spokeswoman said: "Mr Sewell has tendered his resignation but we are deciding whether or not to accept it because there are disciplinary matters. If we continue with our investigation and decide he has committed an offence he will be sacked."
