Walsall turn their attention to Carling Cup action tonight as they travel to Accrington Stanley Fraser Eagle Stadium for a first round clash.

Saddlers’ boss Chris Hutchings saw his side kick-start their Coca-Cola League One campaign with a well-earned 1-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend and is hoping his team can now continue with more of the same against their League Two opponents tonight.

Hutchings was delighted with Saturday’s win over Brighton who are among the teams favoured for a possible promotion run this season and will be calling for more from his troops tonight.

“It was a good workmanlike performance,” he said. “We did well in the first half but knew that we would come under pressure after the break.

“We withstood that pressure well and were quite successful in the way that we dealt with their tactics overall.”

Hutchings was thrilled with how his team showed a real fighting spirit as they will need to do against Accrington tonight, although they suffered defeat to Rotherham in their season’s opener at the weekend.

“We dug deep when we had to and played with real discipline,” the Walsall boss said. “The important thing was that we brought home all three points to start the season in the right way.”
