Walsall have been handed a trip to Darlington or Northampton in the second round of the FA Cup as their reward for their 2-0 win over Shrewsbury at the weekend.

Richard Money's men saw off the Shrews thanks to goals from loan star striker Michael Ricketts and sparkling substitute Ishmael Dermontagnac.

But there was disappointment for the team at the small crowd who turned out to watch the opening round of the competition - just 4,972 and more than 1,000 of them were travelling supporters from the Shropshire town.

If the Cobblers win their replay with Darlington then Walsall will face trips to Northampton's Sixfields stadium on successive Saturdays.

Walsall are due to play the Cobblers on November 24 in League One and have now learned they will face their second round opponents on December 1. Darlington and Northampton replay a week today.

Money said: "Michael scored a terrific header and we might have two or more. All in all it was a pretty comprehensive performance from the lads and we are delighted to go through to the next round of the draw.

* Cheltenham Town have confirmed that the 36-year-old former Aston Villa defender Alan Wright has signed a deal to stay with the League One side until the end of the season.
