British actor Tony Jay, best remembered for being the voice of Judge Frollo in the 1996 animated Disney film The Hunchback of Notre Dame, has died in the US. He was 73.

Jay died on August 13 at Kindred Hospital, Los Angeles, from complications after surgery in April to remove cancer from his lungs, said his wife, Marta MacGeraghty Jay.

Born in London, Jay began acting when he was 30 after moving to South Africa to work in theatre, television and radio. On returning to London he portrayed Shylock in The Merchant of Venice and appeared in the Royal Shakespeare Company's Nicholas Nickleby.

He moved to Los Angeles in 1986. Among his film credits were Twins with Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger and My Stepmother Is An Alien with Dan Aykroyd and Kim Basinger. His final movie, Albert Fish, which he narrated, is to be released this week.
