Aston Villa midfielder Nolberto Solano has given manager David O'Leary a fillip for next season by announcing his retirement from international football with Peru.

The 30-year-old rightsided midfielder, Villa's player of the year, missed several matches for the club last season due to his international commitments in South America.

Even when he return from matches with Peru in time for Villa's Premiership matches, Solano was often too jet-lagged to start.

But Solano has decided to end his career with the Peruvian national team after a goalless draw with Uruguay which greatly diminished the team's chances of qualifying for next year's World Cup.

Peru lie eighth in the South American group, three points behind Uruguay who occupy fifth spot.

There are only four automatic qualification places available - while the fifth nation will enter a play-off against the winners of the Oceania Group.

Solano, who scored nine goals for Villa last term, said: "It's time to give opportunities to other players in Peru.

"Now I have to focus on my club and I have to talk with Aston Villa's board to see what my situation is in the squad."
