A teenage driver died when he lost control of his car and demolished a wall while racing his friend on a Birmingham street, the city's crown court heard yesterday.

Craig Dunbar, aged 18, who had only passed his driving test five months previously, suffered fatal multiple injuries as a result of the crash in Erdington in November 2003.

Scott Smith (19), of Streetly Road, Erdington, has denied causing the death of Mr Dunbar by dangerous driving.

Sybil Thomas, prosecuting, said Mr Dunbar and his girlfriend had been at her parents' home and just before 1pm they left in a Peugeot followed by Smith in a Citroen.

Miss Thomas said according to witnesses the cars were travelling well in excess of the speed limit, one of them estimating it as high as 70mph.

Miss Thomas said: "There came a stage when Craig Dunbar went to overtake this defendant and it was during that manoeuvre that Craig Dunbar lost control of his car."

Miss Thomas said the victim then hit a kerb and then a low garden wall.

The trial continues.
