This year’s V Festival was declared a huge success by police despite a slight increase in the number of arrests.

Staffordshire police said the sunshine had contributed to a slight rise in crimes with around 50 arrests.

But they said that, considering that 90,000 people attended the two-day music event at Weston Park, that number was tiny.

Chief Insp Phil Fortune, the officer in charge of policing the event, said: “From our perspective, it has been a very successful festival.

“There has been a slight increase in crime but you have to remember that last year it rained from start to finish, while this year it has been sunny.”

Crimes reported were mainly incidents of pickpocketing and thefts from tents, but seven people were arrested for supplying drugs.

Chief Insp Fortune said officers had also arrested three teams of organised criminals from Liverpool and Manchester for selling counterfeit tickets and wristbands on a large scale.

“We would like to thank the vast majority of festival-goers whose co-operation ensured a trouble-free and successful event,” he said.

Meanwhile, the heat was also being blamed for the high number of casualties. West Midlands Ambulance Service said it treated 778 people, mostly for minor injuries.

These included falls resulting in strains, sprains, bruises and ankle injuries, as well as alcohol-related conditions and heatstroke. Sixteen people were taken to hospital for injuries.
