Staffordshire Ladies completed a clean sweep against their three Midland rivals to qualify for the semi-finals of the English Ladies County Championship to be held Eaton Golf Club in mid-July.

The reward for success there will be a place in the final at Copt Heath in September. Staffordshire have not reached this stage of the championship for some time.

On the final day of qualifying at Maxstone Park yesterday, Staffs earned their third win in three matches by defeating Worcestershire and Hereford.

Staffs won the foursomes 2-1 and despite a Worcs fight back in the afternoon, the singles eventually went to Staffordshire 41/2-11/2.

That left Warwickshire ruing opportunities on the second day (when they lost to Staffordshire) after they beat Derbyshire 71/2-11/2 to take the runners-up spot.

Staffordshire will be taking all the squad that played at Maxstoke this week to the semis, and they will also be able to introduce their county champion Jenny Rhodes into the team.

The notable performers in this round were Katrina Holdsworth and Loran Nichols, plus Rachel Jennings and Sam Burks, and it was new young players who were very much integral to the team's success.
