Part of Birmingham's New Street station was temporarily closed yesterday after police officers armed with Taser stun guns swooped on two people on one of the platforms.

Two platforms were closed while officers arrested a 21-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man for attempted murder.

West Midlands Police, which was working in partnership with British Transport Police, targeted the pair as part of its investigations into a shooting at the National Exhibition Centre earlier this year.

The couple, who are both from Birmingham, were arrested on platform 11 at about 1pm and were last night being questioned by detectives.

Officers said their arrest was in connection with the shooting at a concert by US rapper Kanye West in March in which two stewards were injured.

A 45-year-old security guard, who was shot at least three times in his neck, lower stomach and foot, was left in a critical condition and endured two operations in hospital.

The concert was under way at the time of the incident.
