English medal favourite Beth Tweddle is out of the Commonwealth Games gymnastics competition with the ankle injury she sustained on Tuesday.
Tweddle landed awkwardly in training at the Rod Laver Arena and damaged ligaments which will need intensive physiotherapy and rehabilitation for several weeks before she can train.
The 20-year-old from Cheshire was due to compete in the women's team and individual competitions and was considered a medal hope in both. She aims to compete in the European championships in six weeks' time.
Tweddle, who won a gold and two silvers in Manchester four years ago, said: "As soon as I did it I knew that there was something wrong. We've had some scans done today and I've found out that I can't compete. As team captain I will be staying on to cheer the others on and keep their spirits high."
