The company behind the construction of the High Speed Two (HS2) High Speed Two rail line through the Midlands has announced plans to build a 2.6km tunnel beneath Birmingham.
HS2 Ltd will recommend that the rail link tunnels between Castle Bromwich Business Park to the eastern edge of Washwood Heath, under the M6 Bromford Viaduct.
A tunnel is proposed as the best option for this specific section of the route because a surface route would have caused more disruption to the local area.
The original proposal, which follows the existing Derby to Birmingham railway line before running for about 1km under the M6 Bromford Viaduct, required moving the River Tame south, building flood defences and relocating National Grid power lines and pylons.
HS2 Ltd Chief Executive, Alison Munro said: “Following a review of the alternatives a tunnel design was considered to be the preferred option as it proved to be less complex in engineering terms and would avoid the loss of local community facilities including the local schools’ playing fields and social clubs.”
