Three teenagers were being questioned yesterday on suspicion of attempting to murder a 94-year-old woman in her home.

Detectives investigating a brutal assault on Ada Hopkinson in Leek, Staffordshire, two weeks ago detained three youths, aged 15, 16 and 17, during dawn raids in the market town.

Staffordshire Police said the pensioner remained in a critical condition in hospital after suffering severe facial and head injuries at her home in Shirburn Road.

The attack is thought to have taken place on the evening of March 17. She was found the following morning by her daughter.

Searches were under way at the addresses where the youths - who were taken to police stations in Staffordshire - were detained.
