Tributes have been paid to the former mayor of Redditch, Jack Field, who has died after a short illness.

Coun Field (Con Crabbs Cross), 88, died at the Alexandra Hospital on March 10, leaving behind a daughter and grandson.

Described as a Redditch man “through and through” he served the borough council for 11 years, taking the office of mayor in 2008/09.

Council leader Carole Gandy (Con Headless Cross and Oakenshaw) said: “Jack was just an absolute gentleman. Nothing was too much trouble for him. He was born and bred in Redditch and was passionate about the town.

"When he was mayor he was so proud to be chosen to represent his town. In the Crabbs Cross area he was well loved by everyone, he was well known by everyone. I think everyone from all political parties saw Jack as a fair man who made decisions with a huge amount of thought.”

Coun Gandy added his death was made doubly sad because it happened just ten days before the Mercian Regiment were due to be given the Freedom of the Borough, a move prompted by Coun Field during his time as deputy mayor.
