Farmers from across the West Midlands are flocking to a Staffordshire college - for training courses in farm tourism.

There are 18 different courses planned over the next five months at Rodbaston College, in Penkridge, ranging from establishing and running a bed and breakfast business or children's farm, to planning law, recycling, sourcing local produce and event management.

Five of the courses include visits to successful farm tourism ventures.

One of the planned courses, covering farm shops and rural retailing, focuses on seven vital aspects such as best use of space, providing excellence in customer service, health and safety law, display, and merchandising.

Niche markets are covered by courses devoted to a variety of countryside tourist attractions such as equine and fisheries.

The training is sponsored through Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' Vocational Training Scheme and run in conjunction with Staffordshire Rural Hub, Staffordshire Rural Forum, Heart of England Tourism, Staffordshire Tourism and the Regional Centre for Tourism Support.

Courses are designed for farmers, their families and employees who already run, or wish to run farm tourism enterprises.

They also provide the opportunity to explore ideas and possibilities and to develop businesses, helping them to become more profitable and network with other businesses in similar situations.
